Q: Can you provide a brief description about who you are, what your company does?
A: Tevva - designs and manufactures electric trucks and electric truck technologies that are defining the next generation of commercial EV technology for clean urban freight and logistics. Our long-range electric truck offers all the well-known benefits of going pure electric, but without compromising on range, performance or cost.
Our technology-led approach has enabled us to build an elite team of automotive, mechanical and electrical engineering expertise, coupled with great leadership to ensure manufacturing standards, qualities and processes are truly world-class.
Tevva’s acquisition of Goodwolfe Energy in 2017 enabled us to bring significant battery expertise in-house. Our recent test results are a testament to the quality of our product and design, and we strive for continual improvement in this key area of EV cost efficiency vs payload with an innovative modular battery-pack design.
Q: What makes your product/research special within your industry?
A: One of the key obstacles to mass adoption of Electric Trucks is the size, design and therefore cost of the battery. A battery is a chemical process whose efficiency is linked to the physical properties around it, such as temperature and humidity. Through our bespoke EV Battery Packs and battery management system, combined with the Range-Extender (enabling the use of all of the battery charge every day) our solution eliminates range anxiety, creating for the first time an effectively unlimited range electric truck.
Q: Why is it important to you to participate in a project like VALUABLE?
A: Driving innovation in all aspects of next generation freight vehicles is key to our vision and purpose. Currently, a very low percentage of electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries are repurposed, this has an environmental cost and impact. (Core ingredients such as lithium are finite and the costly recycling process to recover the raw materials limits the amount of materials recovered.) Being part of a project that is at the forefront of recycling technology enabling a more sustainable holistic solution to battery end-of-life and helps Tevva pave the way for a more efficient EV battery industry through enabling the reuse of lithium cells. Consequently Tevva can confidently offer more sustainable solutions for battery cells at the end of the first life.
As an electric commercial truck producer, we are accountable for the collection and recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries to ensure EU Regulations are followed. This has a financial implication including the costs of collecting, treating and recycling all collected batteries.
We believe in re-using rather than recycling EV batteries as the optimal way forward. The cells still have 70% of their capacity when they are no longer able to power electric vehicles, making them perfect for functions such as home energy storage.
Q: What will be the best thing you achieve within this project?
A: To be able to offer a sustainable battery solution with every electric truck we put on the road, and to have increased awareness amongst fleets about the choices available to them when greening their fleets. Air quality and environmental impact are key drivers in our overall design and manufacturing processes. We have a Whole Vehicle Recycling target of 95%.
